Relationship among Fatigue, Depression, Physiological indices and Health-Related Quality of Life in Patients under Hemodialysis

Abstract
Purpose: This study was to examine the relationship among fatigue, depression and health-related quality of life in hemodialysis patients. Methods: A sample of 176 patients who visited regularly at 13 hemodialysis clinics was recruited from 4th to 22nd, August, 2009 under the patients¡¯ consent. Data were collected by using the structured questionnaires which composed of quality of life, fatigue, and depression measurements. Physiological indices were used laboratory test finding done at the first day of August. Data were analyzed the descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and hierarchical
regression. Results: The mean scores of fatigue, depression, and quality of life were respectively 57.8/120, 23.7/60, and 16.2/30. Physiological indices existed within normal laboratory values. Cacium values and depression were significantly correlated with fatigue. Fatigue and depression were correlated with quality of life. In regression analysis, gender, monthly income, protein values, fatigue, and depression were significant predictors of quality of life. Conclusion: Nurse needs to develop nursing care program focused on fatigue and depression management to keep a good quality of life in hemodialysis patients.
